When specifying external folding door systems, balancing security, performance, aesthetics and design flexibility is essential. Securefold Pro has been developed to meet these requirements, providing a high-performance hardware solution for timber and aluminium external bifold doors.

To help you specify the right solution for your project, we’ve created this simple step-by-step guide highlighting the key considerations when specifying Securefold Pro.

Step 1: Choose Your Required Door Configuration

When determining the most suitable door configuration, you should consider the building layout, available opening space, traffic flow requirements and the desired user experience. Opening direction, panel arrangement and access requirements should also be assessed to ensure the system complements both the architecture and intended functionality of the space.

Key Considerations

  • Number of door panels – an odd number of door panels allows for a dedicated traffic door, providing convenient day-to-day access without opening the entire system. Even numbered configurations require the opening of multiple panels for access, as well as presenting difficulties with weather proofing.

  •   Inward or outward opening – outward opening configurations are often specified to maximise internal floor space, while inward opening applications can be advantageous where external space is limited and there is insufficient room for the panels to stack externally.

Step 2: Select the Most Appropriate Hinge Solution

The choice of hinge can influence both the manufacturing process and the finished appearance of the door set. Securefold Pro offers two hinge options to suit different project requirements.

Non-Mortice Hinges

Surface-mounted design requiring no routing or machining.

Faster and simpler fabrication process.

Radius Mortice Hinges

Flush, integrated appearance.

Suitable for CNC-machined doors.

Often specified for premium architectural applications where aesthetics are a priority.

Step 3: Select Your Hardware Finish

The finish of your bifold door hardware should match the overall design scheme of your project. Securefold Pro is available in several popular finishes:

  • Satin - A versatile finish that works well across contemporary projects
  • Polished chrome - A bright, reflective finish that creates a premium appearance
  • Black - One of the fastest-growing choices in architectural hardware, particularly suited to contemporary architecture or industrial inspired designs
  • Gold - A statement finish that works particularly well in traditional or luxury settings

Step 4: Specify a Threshold

Thresholds are an important part of any external bifold door system to aid waterproofing, support drainage and create a durable transition between inside and outside. Securefold Pro offers a dedicated threshold designed to integrate seamlessly with the hardware system – reducing the need for complex joinery work on site and helping to deliver consistent installation and weather performance. Choose between our satin and black threshold to match with the architectural design of the project.

Key Considerations:

  • You should assess environmental exposure, drainage requirements and the overall performance expectations of the opening. Threshold finish selection should also be considered to ensure consistency with the wider architectural scheme while maintaining the required level of weather protection.

Step 5: Consider Flush Bolt Requirements

The locking arrangement of the system should be determined early in the project to ensure it aligns with how the door will operate. Flush bolts play a vital role in securing inactive panels within a bifold system. Depending on product requirements, flush bolts can be specified as lockable for additional security or non-locking for use alongside a multipoint locking system.

Step 6: Evaluate Security and Long-Term Durability

Security and product longevity should not be overlooked when specifying external bifold door system.

Key Considerations

  • Project location – For coastal or highly exposed environments, ensure the hardware offers enhanced corrosion resistance. Securefold Pro is manufactured from marine-grade 316 stainless steel and features passivated hinges for exceptional durability in demanding conditions.
  • Security requirements – Check project and Building Regulation requirements to ensure the completed door set can achieve relevant security standards, such as PAS 24 where required.
